About Environment Montana
We’re your state environmental group, protecting the places we love, advancing the environmental values we share, winning real results for our environment.
Who we are
Environment Montana is a statewide, citizen-based environmental advocacy organization. We believe there’s something special about Montana — something worth protecting and preserving for future generations. Whether it’s the crystalline waters of the Flathead River, the awe-inspiring views from the Going-to-the Sun Road at Glacier, or the rustle of leaves as you walk through a special place closer to home, Montana’s natural wonders enrich our lives in countless ways.
Yet the places we love and the environmental values we share are too often threatened by powerful industries, shortsighted politicians and more. Defending our environment requires independent research, tough-minded advocacy and spirited grassroots action. That’s the idea behind Environment Montana. Together with thousands of supporters from all walks of life, we take the kind of action that wins tangible results for our environment.

OUR STAFF
What we do
Funded by supporters like you, we research the challenges confronting Montana’s environment and educate the public about what’s at stake. Through our research reports, news conferences, interviews with reporters, op-ed pieces, letters to the editor, and more, we raise awareness of environmental issues and promote sensible solutions. Our canvassers meet people where they are — in public places or door to door — raising awareness, recruiting new supporters and activists, and raising funds to support our work.
When decisions are being made about Montana’s environment, our elected officials hear plenty from oil companies, developers and other powerful interests. We make the case for our environment and help people like you make your voice heard — using methods like petitions, emails, letters and phone calls, all delivered to the right people just when it matters most.

Results

- Protecting Glacier National Park. One of the most iconic natural wonders in America is better protected from oil and gas drilling after our successful campaign to get Congress to ban oil and gas drilling in the Flathead River Valley, just outside Glacier National Park. Thousands of Montanans joined our call, and oil and gas companies responded by voluntarily giving up more than 80 percent of the leases they hold surrounding the park.
- Preserving our wild forests. More than 50 million acres of America’s national forests, including parts of Beaverhead-Deerlodge, still remain untouched and unspoiled. When our forests were threatened by logging and new roads, our research and action helped win a temporary halt on destructive activity on millions of acres of America’s most pristine forests.
- Building a clean energy economy for Montana. Across Montana, workers are building wind turbines and installing solar systems that will supply clean electricity to homes, schools and offices. Our staff and members have helped win new laws to require that more of our energy comes from clean, renewable sources. Montana and 27 other states now have renewable energy standards, and we’re urging our leaders in Washington, D.C., to expand clean energy nationwide.
